ACTIVE Spartans Program

Exercise promotes optimal health and well-being and is integral in the prevention and treatment of various physical and mental health conditions. Our program aims to make physical activity accessible and welcoming for all students. If you're not sure where to begin or looking for new physical activity options, the ACTIVE Spartans Program is for you! 

The ACTIVE Spartans Program is an exercise program that matches you with a Physical Activity Mentor (PAM) who will:  

  • Assess your current fitness level and develop a goal-oriented physical activity plan.   
  • Teach creative and consistent ways to participate in physical activity to make exercise a sustainable part of your life.  
  • Provide support, motivation, and accountability.  
The program consists of one 45-minute session, offered in-person or virtually, and is free. 

The program is for those who are not currently physically active or those not meeting the Center for Disease Control Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans The guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination each week as well as muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups.

Instructions to Participate  

  • Complete the Online Registration Form which helps your PAM to understand your goals, motivation to exercise, health, and exercise history. After completing a PAM will contact you to schedule your initial session. 

What to Expect: 

  • Your PAM will test your current fitness level through a short series of resting and exercising assessments to establish baseline measurements that can be used to develop an exercise goal. Your PAM will then guide you in developing a goal-oriented physical activity plan. 

  • During your session, you have the option of doing a short bodyweight exercise routine with your PAM. 

  • Following your session, your PAM will develop and email you an individualized exercise prescription.   

Your PAM will provide follow-up motivation, accountability, and check-ins via email or additional sessions to further support you.   

Types of Exercise  

The types of exercise in your prescription may include some or all the following activities:  

  • Aerobic: to improve body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness  
  • Muscle-strengthening: to improve muscular strength and endurance  
  • Stretching: to improve mobility and flexibility (i.e., range of motion)  
  • Neuromuscular: to improve balance, agility, and proprioception (body awareness)
